LOOPSTRA

    Esther Loopstra - May 10 to July 11, 2024

The City of Auburn and the Auburn Arts Commission are pleased to present the work of Esther Loopstra at the Community Center Gallery, on view May 10 – July 11, 2024.

My work takes the viewer on a passage, revealing the abstract essences of these systems and blurring the lines between our human internal systems and the nature around us. Many times the work depicts what looks like living organs or organisms, viewing them from the vantage point of a landscape you could navigate and engage with.
My mixed media paintings unfold like a journey, and I flow with my intuition, developing layers, and working back into them, allowing the paintings to change and grow. When painting on canvas, I use acrylic and latex paint but add surprising materials like joint compound, collage, liquid latex, and acrylic mediums, along with markers, crayons, and pencils. When I create on paper, I use a more simple approach with fluid acrylic, masking fluid, acrylic ink, and pencil. I also create stream-of-consciousness poems that I incorporate into the work.

Hanley

William Hanley - May 8 - July 10, 2024

The City of Auburn and the Auburn Arts Commission are pleased to present the work of William Hanley at the Cheryl Sallee Gallery, on view May 8 – July 10, 2024.
“As someone who practices meditation in nature, I am always on the lookout for new places that inspire contemplation. One of my muses is the reflection I find on rippled water. I find the abstract shapes, curved lines, and colors fascinating. I’ve learned that when people think of the reflective surface of water in a photograph, they often think of a still lake or pond, perhaps near a grand landscape. But when I concentrate on the rippled surface of a body of water, I see art that often goes unnoticed.” - William Hanley

Born in Seattle, William Hanley currently resides in Richland, WA. Prior to his cross-country move from North Carolina in 2022, he worked as an Electronic Resources Management Specialist for Duke University Libraries for over 15 years. He is now a professional nature photographer who emphasizes connections between positive mental health, nature, and art.
