Planning Services

The Planning Services division of the Department of Community Development provides current zoning and land use as well as long range planning functions for the City. Under the direction of the City Council, and input from the Planning Commission, the division shapes the future of Auburn by land use policies for the Comprehensive Plan. From the Comprehensive Plan, the division can apply essential services to businesses and residents. Community involvement, fostering design through planning controls, preserving our unique heritage, and encouraging a broad range of housing and employment base are central roles of the division.

Planning Services is responsible for administration of the Comprehensive Plan - including annual amendments, Zoning Code, Subdivision Ordinance, local SEPA ordinance, and other growth management plans and regulations. Development review is a function of the division which includes review of development projects for consistency with land use regulations such as the zoning code, subdivision code, critical area regulations, the processing of land use applications, and the promulgation and administration of land use and environmental codes.

Development review involves considerable interaction with citizens and developers on a day-to-day basis at the front counter and at several points throughout the development permit. Review of development applications involves coordination with other city departments and frequently involves coordination and collaboration with other jurisdictions or agencies.

Staff support is provided to the City Council, Planning Commission, and Hearing Examiner on planning related issues and projects. View the Public Meetings Calendar for meeting dates.
