 Gabriela Nirino

Gabriela Nirino - January 9 to March 6, 2025

The City of Auburn and the Auburn Arts Commission are beyond excited to present the work of Gabriela Nirino at the Community Center Gallery, on view January 9 – March 6, 2025.

“I am a weaver. The first thing I think about when I find something new is whether it can become a yarn or be woven. Weaving is all about to interrelate, connect and building. I am interested in what happens in those zones of exchange between people, objects, materials, disciplines, ideas.

As a maker, I am particularly interested in natural, recycled and founded materials because I feel a responsibility every time I decide
to bring a new object to the world. I am interested in working with what is around me, to give value to forgotten materials. Doing with my hands is a way of approaching reality that allows me to think, stop, and choose. My previous work, the Jacquard pieces, talk about anonymous workers who build our community with their hands.

My work in recent years has focused on the world of plants. In 2020, during the pandemic, I moved from Argentina to Seattle, where my husband had stayed. For the first time in my life, I live in a house surrounded by trees. I had no materials, so Nature was my friendly partner and provider. I begin to use fallen branches, leaves, dirt. For several years I worked with corn husks. That experience helped me to work with some plants that I collect to transform into fiber. I believe in the need to recover and reforest the land and the pieces I do try
to talk about that.”

Sharon Gottula

Sharon GottulaJanuary 8 to March 5, 2025

The City of Auburn and the Auburn Arts Commission are pleased to present the work of Sharon Gottula at the Cheryl Sallee Gallery, on view January 8 – March 5, 2025.

"Sharon Gottula's artistic journey took a transformative turn in 2010 when she saw her first encaustic painting. This encounter redirected the course of her work, steering it from photography to multimedia compositions.

A Leo with a fire-heavy astrological chart, painting with a blowtorch felt like a natural extension of her creative expression. Deeply interested in the environment, the natural substances of wax and damar enhance and intensify the environmental themes that feature heavily in her work.

In her encaustic pieces, Gottula juxtaposes transparent and opaque layers, integrating photography, fabric, and paper to create a complex, narrative storyline. Through this combination of diverse elements, she chronicles the transient nature of memory, captures the fragmented moments of human existence, and reflects upon the endangered fragility of our surroundings."
